Bronze Medal 2004 Canterbury A & P Show International Aromatic Wine Competition
4 Stars Michael Cooper’s Buyers Guide To NZ Wine 2005 Bronze Medal, Royal Easter Show 2005
The fruit for this wine was grown on both the upper and lower terraces of Askerne Vineyard. The small amount of fruit from the heavier soils of the upper terrace displayed gooseberry and nettle characters. On the lower terrace with its stony, sandy soils the fruit displayed intense passion fruit and tropical characters. This pattern of fruit characters is consistent from Askerne Vineyard.
The fruit was hand harvested and sorted. Harvest occurred between 29th March and 26th April 2004.
90 % of the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and 10 % in seasoned French oak barriques. 2.5 % of the blend is Semillon to add some additional complexity and depth. The barrel fermentation was intended to fatten the middle palate rather than to impart strong oak flavours. The wine was fermented through to total dryness.
Brix 23.5 to 24.6
PH 3.24
TA 7.6g/l
Alcohol 14.0%
This wine shows an intense bouquet of passion fruit, limes, melon and guava that follows through into the palate. It is richly textured, well rounded with a good balancing acidity and a long aromatic finish.
The wine works well with salads e.g. salads based around smoked kawhai or smoked chicken, asparagus, mango, banana and capsicum.
